Rapid Identification of Right-Fit Patients

A global pharmaceutical company needed to identify clinical research sites with the right patient population to enroll in a major depressive disorder (MDD) clinical trial. BEKhealth rapidly identified several hundred right-fit patients at one clinical research site, toward the end of enrollment. This site would ultimately become the highest enrolling out of 57 clinical research sites.

The Problem

A sponsor running an MDD study was struggling to reach their clinical trial recruitment targets on time due to difficulty in identifying and engaging the right matched patients. The study launched and 9 months into enrollment there was an extremely high screen fail rate with sites drastically under-enrolling.

Our Approach

To pull timelines in, the sponsor selected one of our BEKnetwork client sites to try and rescue the study. When picking a BEKnetwork site, the sponsor gets a proactive, AI-supported, high-touch approach to find and match patients diagnosed with MDD who meet precise study criteria. This enables the site to activate a study protocol on the BEKplatform in a matter of days and receive a list of automatically pre-screened patients within their platform, cutting pre-screening timelines by weeks.

After the site was selected for the study, the BEKhealth clinical team was given the inclusion/exclusion criteria and was able to identify a list of over 680 qualified, active patients within the site’s own EHR.

Inclusion:

  • MDD – mod to severe diagnosis confirmed and no remission
  • PHQ9 10+ or Q1_Q2>2
  • Monotherapy with specific SSRI or SNRI

Exclusion:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Diabetic neuropathy or chronic pain syndrome
  • Initiated Psychotherapy
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • HIV/hep-B/hep-C
  • Other mental illnesses with psychotic features
  • Vagal nerve stimulus, TMS, psychosurgery
  • ECT or ketamine treatment
