Q&A with Marissa Fiorello, BEKHealth Senior Manager of Research Services

Marissa Fiorello knows first-hand the challenges healthcare organizations face in their clinical
research efforts. As Senior Manager of Research Services, she helps BEKHealth clients overcome
those challenges and achieve their research goals. In this Q&A, Marissa discusses her career
background and explains what drew her to the role at BEKHealth:

BEK offers an environment where implementations of traditional clinical research processes happen at a faster pace! That’s rewarding!

– Marissa Fiorello

Tell us a little bit about your experience in the field of clinical research?
Prior to joining BEKHealth, I was the Clinical Research Manager at Boston Medical Center (BMC)
in ophthalmology, nephrology, and pulmonology. Due to BMC’s unique structure, I was
responsible for the complete clinical research process beginning with pre-award management,
contract budget negotiations, and implementation. This afforded me the opportunity to learn
the clinical research process from start to finish as I was responsible for the entire process.
Therefore, I saw each research project through its life cycle including mitigating any challenges
that presented themselves. As my knowledge grew, so did my knowledge of the challenges
faced by those in the industry.

Anything in your career to date that you are particularly proud of?
During my time at BMC, I significantly increased our number of clinical research studies. We
grew from a handful of studies to approximately 50 studies running simultaneously. I
accomplished this in part by establishing an intern partnership with my alumni Northeastern
University in Boston. Students who were interested in the field of science and medicine were
given the opportunity to engage in the clinical setting as research assistants.

What compelled you to join BEK?
BEK’s commitment to clinical research and its solutions to the challenges of clinical research.
BEK’s mission is aligned with my personal beliefs of improving clinical research processes by
enabling research teams and investigators to expand access to more patients. The early phases
of patient recruitment, enrollment, and patient matching are challenging as it is labor-intensive
and delay the actual start of the study. BEK reduces matching time and allows organizations to
prioritize face time with their patients. As we experienced with the development of COVID
vaccines, the timeliness of research saves lives; however, you must also ensure the integrity of
your research at the same time. BEK solutions accomplishes both.

Why do you think BEK is an appealing place to work?
BEK has created a culture that is collaborative and values the experiences of each and every
team member. As a person who did not come from an IT background and is new to this
segment of clinical research, I value the acceptance I have felt at BEK. The team is always open
to new ideas and achieves to make things even better than it was before. BEK offers an
environment where implementations of traditional clinical research processes happen at a
faster pace! That’s rewarding!
